360°Panoramic View of Kyoto
At a height of 100m,from the observation deck on the top floor one can enjoy a complete 360°view of Kyoto and see to Osaka on a clear day.As dusk turns to night the city lights up and the gently sloping ridge of the thirty-six peaks of Higashiyama are beautiful and fantastic.
[Built on a building’s rooftop!]
A nine storey building with three sub-floors serves as the foundation for the tower.
The tower adds approximately 800 tons of weight to the building, but the special construction methods used ensure that this creates no probrems for the building.
[An engineering marvel, famous worldwide!]
Built in December 1964, the concept behind Kyoto Tower’s characteristic shape is a lighthouse built to illuminate the landlocked city of Kyoto.
Did you Know that it’s not just the shape of the tower that is special, but also its architecture?
Unlike the Effel Tower or Tokyo Tower, it doesn’t use a steel beam truss. |

| ■Kyoto Tower is an example of Monocoque(structural skin)architecture, wherein the thinner outer shell supports the weight of the structure, similar to the construction of planes or boats, or the natural examples of crabs and shrimp. The tower body consists of special 12 to 22mm thick steel plates joined into a cylinder. |
